Who invented chocolate ?

Many chocolate lovers ask ... who invented chocolate? The history of chocolate goes back to legends handed down over thousands of years among the native peoples of Central and South America. The legends show how only the gods were considered worthy of enjoying the fruits from the Theobroma tree. (Food of the gods).

It has been assumed that as early as the Toltec era, inhabitants of the Mexico region discovered by accident the cocao beans. These were the people assumed who invented chocolate. Learn how they made the chocolate, read more here.

Later down the track, instead of waiting for the ripe pods to burst open on the trunk or branch they would have noticed that it was possible to place these pods into the moist earth so that they could ferment. After waiting several days they could be dug up, striped of their shells and washed in water. After this it was a matter of placing the beans in the sun to dry. The beans could then be ground into a mortar, and formed into fist sized balls. Pieces could be broken off these balls as required and mixed with cold water. Cornflour could be added or honeyor spiced up with chillies.

The Aztecs made their conquest over these people in 1325 and called the beans cacahuatl. With the value of these beans, they were used as a currency. The Aztec rulers would demand taxes in the form of cocoa beans from the conquered districts.

Chocolate came to the notice of the rest of the world when the Spanish first took over the New World. The spaniards took over control from the Aztecs. Led by Hernando Cortes (1485-1547) they discovered a huge reserve of cocoa beans estimated to be worth a vast fortune in the hands of the Aztec emperor of Mexico, Montezuma II (1480-1520).
