Growing thyme tips
When growing thyme, for best results plant in well drained soil in a sunny position. Best planting time is spring. Sow seeds directly where they are to grow in rows, thin them as they grow about 30cm (12in) apart. Keep soil moist, but be very careful not to over water. (They prefer a more lighter, drier, chalky soil). Instead of growing from seeds, they can also be grown from cuttings taken from other plants. (During spring).
Optimum plant depth – 5mm. Plant apart – 30cm. Row space – 30cm. Seeds germinate in 12 – 14 days. Matures in 8 to 10 week.
About Thyme
Botanical name : Thymus vulgaris. A bushy plant of grey-green leaves and lavender flowers. Has a strong, sweet aroma ideal for culinary purposes. Thyme contains thymol which is a natural, powerful disinfectant. Can also be used as a good ground cover. Good for companion planting in the vegetable garden as assists surrounding plants. Attracts bees to the garden. In past history thyme has been associated with strength and happiness. In the middle ages it was a symbol of courage.High ranking ladies embroidered sprigs of thyme on the cloths of knights before they went to fight in the crusades.
