Growing garlic tips
Growing garlic is best done in a rich moist soil in a sunny position.
Ensure soil is not too hard.
Garlic grows from a bulb which splits before harvest time into a number of small bulbs called cloves.
Plant individual cloves of garlic that can be purchased at your local nursery or garden centre into the ground or in pots.
Best time for planting is early spring.
For warmer climates plant in spring or autumn. Optimum planting depth is 5cm (2in) deep.
Spacing between plants should be 15cm (6in) apart.
Rows of 30cm (12in) apart.
Keep soil moist by regular watering during summer.
Towards the middle or end of summer, when the tops yellow and die down, dig up the garlic and leave it to dry thoroughly in a protected area. Or hang up in bunches to dry. The seperated bulbs can be used for replanting.
